A new kind of tea house

High tea on the Gold Coast

I love a good high tea. If there is Royal Albert chinaware involved, my answer is always yes.
On a recent trip to the Gold Coast however, I stumbled across CHA Tea Providores, an independent tea house which offers a unique interpretation of the traditional high tea. Lured in by the interior palette of green and copper, I was like a child in a candy shop when selecting a tea from the huge variety displayed in clear boxes in the store. With over 40 varieties of teas including black and green tea and herbal infusions sourced from India, China and Sri Lanka, and Victoria, Australia, CHA Tea Providores is like heaven for tea drinkers. Initially overwhelmed with options, I decided to go with the iced Turkish Apple infusion, a fruit blend with real apple pieces and pomace combined with sweet blackberry leaves. Absolutely delish.

With tasty tea-infused treats served on stunning copper towers and tea served in clear glassware, high tea at CHA Tea Providore’s is one of minimal and contemporary style. Passionate about creating a bespoke high tea experience, CHA’s in-house pastry chefs frequently experiment with new recipes and flavours to bring the worlds of tea and baking together. A signature treat is the four layer Earl Grey Tea Cake and scones with an all-natural jam made with local berries and infused with Strawberries and Cream Tea.

Working alongside design studio Derlot, the team at CHA has pushed the boundaries with what is considered to be a tea house with a refreshing and contemporary design aesthetic featuring a neutral palette of white and black with pops of copper, colour and greenery throughout. A focal point of the tea house is the large colourful wall mural produced by Queensland visual identity studio Frank & Mimi, which pays homage to the tea pickers. As tea production is still very artisan and labour intensive, it relies on the knowledge of the tea workers to pick the tea at the right time, then sort, process and handle the tea in the perfect way.
