Sydney Staycation: Pier One Hotel, Sydney Harbour
My husband Nick and I quite enjoy the occasional staycation. Living in Sydney, there have been times where we have ventured out and stayed the weekend in a hotel somewhere for a special occasion. Some people say ‘but you live in Sydney, why would you stay in a hotel?,’ and my response is that it is slightly different waking up to views of the harbour from my hotel room in Walsh Bay compared to waking up in my apartment in Redfern. The truth is I love to travel and have new experiences but sometimes work and life doesn’t allow for a two-week getaway and so it is nice to go somewhere different, even if it is nearby and feel like you are experiencing something new. What I love about Sydney is that it is so diverse. You can go from one suburb to another and feel like you are in different worlds.
So now that we know how much I appreciate a good weekend getaway without having to travel too far, I wanted to share about our most recent staycation at Pier One Hotel in Walsh Bay.
Nick had just returned home from a six week stint in NYC where he completed a typeface (font design) program at The Cooper Union. While I made a last minute trip to NY and joined him for the first 10 days, after coming home and not seeing him for a few weeks I thought it would be nice to celebrate his return home with a night’s stay at Pier One Sydney Harbour.
Where we stayed
Pier One Sydney Harbour, Autograph Collection
11 Hickson Road, Walsh Bay Sydney NSW
The hotel is beautiful. The combination of marble, timber and brass details in the foyer and bar area gives the hotel a contemporary and sophisticated vibe. The suites feature a fresh palette of crisp whites and blue hues while repeating the timber and marble detailing seen throughout the hotel.
What I love about Pier One Sydney Harbour, Autograph Collection is that it is a boutique hotel in such a prime location. I much prefer the feel and atmosphere of a boutique hotel where I can open the sliding door to my balcony and hear the sound of the seagulls and the waves lapping against the pier. At Pier One, the setting is intimate and there is a strong connection between the locality of the rooms and the water that surrounds them.
What to do
Hire a bike
Pier One Sydney Harbour, Autograph Collection features a bicycle rack on the pier with bikes available to guests to hire. The bikes have baskets for your handbag and belongings and it’s nice to be out and about, cruising around Walsh Bay.
Explore Walsh Bay, The Rocks and Circular Quay
Wander along the piers in Walsh Bay and find a nice spot by the water for a coffee or lunch. Circular Quay and The Rocks are also only a short stroll away.
Afternoon drinks at Pier One Sydney Harbour Autograph Collection
We really enjoyed having an afternoon cocktail in the sun on the pier at the hotel bar. With amazing views of the harbour, the pier is the perfect spot for an afternoon drink.
Where to eat
For brekky, you can’t go past the hotel’s restaurant The Gantry. We had buffet breakfast included in our room rate and to be honest I didn’t have high expectations because usually hotel buffet breakfasts consist of dry pancakes, bacon, potato gems and scrambled eggs that have been sitting in the heat tray for too long. The buffet breakfast at The Gantry however far exceeded my expectations. I felt like a kid in a candy shop, I didn’t know where to start. There was a crepe station, a fresh breads and pastries table, a fridge with bottles of juice and coconut water and jars of bircher muesli and yoghurt. There was also a kitchenette area with cereals, a bar with meats and smoked salmon and the open kitchen served chat potatoes with herbs, omelettes and eggs made to order, bacon, chipolata sausages and more. I had to have it all!
Lotus Dumpling Bar, Walsh Bay
A weekend getaway to Walsh Bay wouldn’t be complete without a visit to Lotus Dumpling Bar. Just a short stroll from Pier One, Lotus is an intimate space of exposed brick walls, copper details and pops of mint green. The trendy vibes of Lotus are complimented by a menu of authentic Chinese delicacies, dumplings and exotic cocktails. My Lotus go-to is the crispy eggplant with honey and sesame.
